The Royal Wedding Issue by Diana in Heaven

Blogging princess of the Twittersphere, Diana in Heaven gave us her views on the Royal Wedding, ahead of the big day. She reviewed some of the best wedding souvenirs – apparently they aren’t what they used to be; seethed about William and Kate’s celebrity guest list – the most glamorous guest at hers was the Archbishop of Canterbury; and gave us a couple of home truths about her marriage to Charlie – declaring ‘Marriage is for f***g idiots’. There is this and more, but don’t expect anything on Pippa’s bottom, not even the wonderful Diana in Heaven saw that coming.

The 3D Issue by Mother’s Loz Horner

Whilst Loz once dreamed of an entertainment world solely in 3D as kid, the 2011 reality was that 3D sort of crashed and burned, shortly after it’s peak. In this 3D issue, he explored topics like whether it was cinema’s fad or savour, the shortcomings of the Nintendo 3DS – it gives you headaches; and there was also some 3D printing thrown in for good measure too. It was certainly one of the most insightful SFTW of 2011. It was packed with facts, stats and some cracking examples. But then it was written by one of Mother’s cleverest strategists, so would you expect anything less.

The Design Issue by Will Fenning

We cover the topic of design in most issues, but as with most years, to coincide with London Design Festivals, we had an issue dedicated to the subject back in September. It was written by a talented young writer who had a new found eye for the subject, and he investigated and covered a range of interesting design topics. There was the physical box to store your Facebook messages; some chairs made with traditional paper moulding techniques; and some beautiful looking pylons and power stations. There was even a sweet shop designed to know everything about its customers – not as creepy as it sounds.

The Northern Soul Issue by Elaine Constantaine

Back in November, in anticipation of her forthcoming ‘Northern Soul the film’ , photographer and director Elaine Constantaine, with the help of a troupe of young ‘soulies’, introduced us to an often uncelebrated but non-the-less influential youth movement from the 60’s and 70’s. As an education to the scene for the uninitiated, or a reminder of what made Northern Soul so special to those in the know, this SFTW included the killer Northern Soul playlist and insight into what it’s like to be a young Northern Soulie today.

The London Riots Issue by Mother

Finally, there was our point of view on the summer’s most talked about event – the London riots. We talked about the good and bad of social media; brands made for looting; the riots as social currency; the Heroine of Hackney, and doing something nice for Ashraf. Whilst the anarchy is perhaps a distant memory, it’s a reminder of state of the nation as we enter 2012, and the importance of social and economic changes.
